Nagelsmann's Tenure as National Coach Criticized by Experts

Julian Nagelsmann's stint as the head coach of the German national football team has been deemed a failure, with former professionals Markus Babbel and Felix Magath offering sharp critiques of the 38-year-old's performance.

The recent World Cup concluded with Spain claiming the title, while the German Football Association (DFB) finds itself far from such glory. Following a disappointing exit against Paraguay in the Round of 16, calls for a transformation within the national team have intensified, particularly with the need for a new head coach. Jürgen Klopp is now in the spotlight to take over after Nagelsmann's resignation.

Babbel on Nagelsmann: "It was extreme. It was an absolute disaster"

Babbel and Magath both agree that Klopp has significant improvements to make. Babbel expressed his frustrations on "ran", pointing out Nagelsmann's infrequent attendance at matches: "Both Jogi Löw and Hansi Flick were somewhat restrained in this regard. But with Julian Nagelsmann, it was extreme. It was an absolute disaster that no one could understand."

Babbel further criticized Nagelsmann's apparent resistance to advice from seasoned players, stating, "My main criticism is this: when many former top players offer their insights, I would at least listen. Whether it's Lothar Matthäus, Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger, or Thomas Müller. It wasn't just me. When you present yourself in such a way in that role, it's no surprise that Felix Magath speaks of feeling overwhelmed."

Magath, speaking on the show "At Broski – Die Sport-Show", was equally candid about Nagelsmann's shortcomings. He firmly stated, "The World Cup was wasted because the decision was made to appoint Julian Nagelsmann as the national coach. He had no experience. The young man was overwhelmed from the start."

He elaborated, "In my view, Julian Nagelsmann assembled the team completely incorrectly and sent them out in the wrong way. We had no team, we had no game plan."

"It’s challenging when you field Sané and Musiala"

During the World Cup, Magath saw a lack of cohesion on the pitch and highlighted two players in particular. "It’s difficult when you have Sané and Musiala on the field. Both are individually talented players, but they tend to play individually. They are not the type of players who integrate others into the game."

However, Nagelsmann's failure is seen as part of a larger issue within German football. Magath pointed out, "The decline of German football began with the youth development centers because the training is not adequate. We are on a completely wrong track."

He questioned, "How can you develop players if you train them like heart patients? Without intensity, just for fun, allowing them to mess around a bit to get the ball."

Many fans and experts are now looking forward to a new era under Klopp with a different approach. An announcement of this collaboration could come as soon as this week, and numerous fresh faces are expected to appear in the squad during the first international break at the end of September.
