Germany reaches the U19 European Championship final against Spain, thanks to Tessa Zimmermann's extra-time goal. A recap of both semifinals.

Germany has advanced to the U19 European Championship final against Spain, thanks to a decisive extra-time goal by Tessa Zimmermann. Here’s a recap of both semifinal matches.
Germany – Austria 1:0 (AET)
Pre-Match: Germany's Lineup Adjustments
With key defender Luzie Zähringer suspended due to yellow card accumulation, Mia-Lena Maas from SC Freiburg stepped into the right side of the back three in Germany's established 3-4-3 formation. Lina Száraz took over the central role previously held by Zähringer. Maas had already featured in the starting lineup during the first two group matches and was substituted in the game against Sweden. In Zähringer's absence, Maj Schneider, another Freiburg player, donned the captain's armband. Ahead of the match, Schneider noted Austria as a “really tough team,” highlighting their physical play and counter-attacking ability, while referring to Zähringer as the team's “tactical leader.”
Austria: First U19 EM Semifinal Appearance
Austria reached the semifinal after narrowly losing 1-2 to Spain in their last group match. Coach Markus Hackl had intended to rest some players for the semifinal but still fielded a competitive side. Despite Spain’s strong performance, Austria managed to create opportunities, including a shot that hit the post. Hackl expressed confidence in his team’s strategy, stating they aimed to maintain their game plan of applying pressure and forcing Germany into errors. Unfortunately, the team faced setbacks with midfielder Sara Grabovac suffering a knee injury late in the match, adding to their woes after Anna Osl had already sustained a serious knee injury earlier in the tournament. Returning to the starting lineup were captain Valentina Illinger, Maja Keckeis, Ronja Leidler, and Alina Kerschbaumer in defense, along with Valentina Pötzl and Teresa Frizberg in midfield.
Many Fouls, Few Goals in Regular Time
Germany started the match with early pressure, but Austria quickly found their footing, leading to a tactical stalemate. Although Germany controlled possession, they struggled to create clear scoring chances against a resolute Austrian defense. The best opportunity came in the 32nd minute when Laila Portella almost capitalized on a brilliant solo run by Helen Börner, but a mix-up with Felicia Sträßer thwarted the chance.

Austria's captain, Valentina Illinger, had to be substituted in the 39th minute for Anika Hofschweiger, maintaining the defensive setup. As the match progressed, it became increasingly physical, with few clear-cut chances for either side. A long-range effort from Memminger in the 88th minute went over the bar, while Denise Luegers’ attempt at the other end narrowly missed. After 90 minutes, Germany led in shots 13 to 6, but many were too tame to challenge the Austrian goalkeeper.
In the 109th minute of extra time, a corner kick from Germany led to the breakthrough goal by Tessa Zimmermann. Positioned at the far post, she nodded the ball in from a long delivery by Müller. This goal marked the 50th of the tournament and secured Germany's twelfth final appearance, their first since 2023. Their last title came in 2011 against Italy, and they will now face Spain, with kickoff set for Friday at 18:00.
Spain – Sweden 3:0 (1:0)

In the first semifinal, Spain triumphed over Sweden with a score of 3-0, with A-national coach Sonia Bermúdez watching from the stands in Zenica. Spain took an early lead in the 3rd minute and maintained control throughout the match, while Sweden struggled to adapt to Spain's attacking style. Sweden managed only two shots on goal during the entire match. The goals were scored as follows:
- 3’ 1-0: Rosalía Domínguez assisted Alba Cerrato, who skillfully turned and curled the ball into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Karlsson with no chance.
- 60’ 2-0: Domínguez scored this time, following a counter-attack initiated by Cerrato. Her shot was expertly placed into the upper right corner. Domínguez, just 17, has already made two appearances for Barcelona.
- 64’ 3-0: Another assist from Domínguez set up Ainoa Gómez, who headed home from close range. This quick succession of goals sealed the match for Spain, who played solid defense thereafter.
With this victory, Spain has reached the U19 EM final for the fifth consecutive time, aiming for their fifth title in succession.
